The

Pidgeon

Coop

Hello & welcome to The Pidgeon Coop! Our names are Chris & Jessica Pidgeon. We show Exhibition Budgies as a hobby & occasionally have some available to new exhibitors or to families who just want a pet budgie. We do have to cover some of our seed bill, somehow.

Here's how The Pidgeon Coop began:

The idea of breeding birds & becoming The Pidgeon Coop, happened by chance. It was something that we accidently fell in to. We never thought of raising budgies or any bird for that matter, until we ended up with some American Budgies aka Parakeets, because of our love for critters.

In the fall of 2013, I found an ad on Craigslist for American Budgies aka Parakeets. The ad said that they had 7 parakeets with 3 cages & they needed them gone today. If the parakeets were not gone that day, they would toss them (cages & birds) in to a dumpster or release them in to the wild. I am a huge animal lover & I couldn't let this happen so I talked to my husband, Chris,  & he allowed me to meet with this person to pick the parakeets up.

When I arrived to get the parakeets, I was greeted by a very nice lady & her granddaughter. Not at all what I expected when I thought of someone that would trash innocent birds, so I asked her about the ad. She said that was not her ad, it was one her grandson made. She showed me her ad (which was nicer) & told me she wanted $ for everything. I gave her $ & found out why she wanted to get rid of them.

Her husband wanted to raise parakeets & sell them to the feed stores. It was a dream of his to breed & raise his favorite childhood pet. Before he got to experience baby parakeets, he passed away. He never got to finish what he started, so it broke my heart.

When I took the parakeets home, I told my husband, Chris, the story she told me. He looked at the parakeets & told me, "Well, we can try to raise parakeets & see how it goes. Worst case scenario is that we have to sell the babies to the feed store if  people don't want hand tamed parakeets."

So...we gave it a shot & started setting up for breeding after their wellness checks & we obtained all of the necessary breeding supplies.

We became The Pidgeon Coop in January 2014, after we started getting baby birds. We made a Facebook page & advertised on birdsnow.com.

After a month or two, we had families show interest & it just blew up from there.

It was amazing, how many people were interested in hand tame & hand fed birds.

However, once we started attending bird expos...we found out about this wonderful hobby of showing birds. So we decided to change from selling all kinds of birds to just breeding & showing Exhibition Budgies. They're such beautiful & smart birds. They also have amazing & unique personalities. If you love budgies, this is a hobby worth trying. No, it is not a money maker & yes, they will eat better than you. But it is an amazing hobby, with amazing birds & you will meet a lot of wonderful people. So if you're interested, hit us up & let's talk exhibition budgies!!

Here's how we came up with The Pidgeon Coop:

When we were trying to decide what to call our new little hobby. Chris' father called us. I had their phone number in my phone as "Pidgeon Coop." It popped up on the screen, and after talking with my father-in-law, I looked at Chris & said, "What about The Pidgeon Coop?!"  It was perfect!!  Plus, Pidgeon is our last name too!!

Here's how we came in to showing Exhibition Budgies:

May 2017 is when we were able to start showing Exhibition Budgies aka English Budgies.

We actually got introduced to showing them when I came across Exhibition Budgies in the Fall of 2016 at the Bird Marts/Expos.

I saw the Exhibition Budgies at the Marts & was intrigued by their floofy heads. I fell in love with them! So...I picked up a few from an exhibitor selling culls. I did not know that he showed or that we would become good friends with Randy later.

I came across another table with a beautiful pair of Exhibitions that I really wanted. This was our, now friends, Jim & Al. They both introduced Chris & I to the idea of showing Exhibition Budgies & told us to come to a future show in Houston.

We attended our first show, brought our own bred & banded babies to show, & fell in love with the hobby. We also loved the people in the hobby & how friendly they were compared to another bird club we tried before meeting them.

We have learned so much about the hobby, budgie genetics & made some good friends who love budgies like we do. Budgies are fun!!

Well, that is how we got started with The Pidgeon Coop, came up with our name & started showing for fun.

Thank you for checking us out! :-)
